EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
