Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
